Great Lakes Steelhead Company has just sent us a box of Trick 'Em Deep Beads. These beads have some great potential and will come in very handy in a tight spot, or more like a deep slot.The rundown:
These beads are made from glass, which makes them heavy. Heavy beads that get down in fast water without having to attach a pile of split shot. I like them already.
Another cool features is in the technique and the material. Because they are glass, colors can be swirled together, and there is a nice translucent finish to them. These things really look great and should prove to be deadly effective.
These are not going to replace the standard plastic trick 'em bead. Those will still be the go-to for most of us. These Deep Beads are for getting down, especially when the water is fast.
I can think of several spots where we fish beads (instead of swinging) because the slot is fast and deep. Swinging a fly is not an option there, and the biggest problem we have is that it can take 5 or 6 split shot to get a plastic bead down. Nymphing is the only effective way.
Now we can cut out most of those splitties and throw one deep bead, along with a plastic bead trailer, and it is game on!
These things do have a really niche spot in the lineup, but they will prove to be really valuable when you do find yourself in that situation!
