Orvis.  It just sounds good, doesn’t it?  Orvis.  The oldest mail-order company in the country.  Founded in 1856 by Charles Orvis who wanted to sell superior fly-fishing products combined with pride in customer satisfaction and service.

Big Y Fly Company.  It just sounds good, doesn’t it?  Big Y Fly Company.  Founded in 2004, offering affordable, quality products, excellent value and world-class customer service, including free same-day shipping.

Taking a ride on the wayback machine before the internet, like the 1970s, there were three fly fishing catalogs I waited for every late winter; Kaufman’s, Cabela’s, and the granddaddy of them all the Super Bowl of catalog events, the Orvis fly fishing catalog.  That was catalog nirvana.   That Orvis catalog was the one I read from cover to cover.

Fast forward to the internet e-commerce boom.  And though not nearly as bad as Cabela’s, it seemed for a while from an outsider's point of view that Orvis might have taken its eye off the Fly Fishing throne that it alone occupied since 1856.  Still the biggest by far, there was not even a close second, especially since Cabela’s barely does fly fishing anymore, Orvis ventured into other areas, and maybe some lost some cred.  Dog beds?!  But like us here and most folks everywhere, they state it plainly, ‘We Love Dogs’.  And not for nothing our fearless mascots George and Hazel agree that Orvis makes a damn nice dog bed, it even keeps them off the couch, most of the time.

Back to fly fishing, Orvis has stormed back.  The Battenkill is still the most popular fly reel ever, and they have done a masterful job mixing tradition with new to provide us, as dealers and you, our great customers, quality and value you just will not get anywhere else.

To our extremely faithful Big Y customers; we are not changing anything about the way we go about our business.  We have many new, exciting Big Y products in development, and our fly tiers continue to outperform, and frankly are getting more consistent; constantly improving and innovating.  Our Nano Rods and Big Y Standard Reels continue to be our best sellers, they just flat out do their job, so that you can enjoy the great world of fly fishing and hopefully get out there more than ever because you have a few more of your hard-earned dollars left to put in the gas tank.

Excited is putting in mildly.  We are enthusiastic, maybe even giddy to offer this great line of products to you.  Our shop is getting an entire makeover just so we can fit them on the floor, so if you  are ever in Hood River, Oregon, please stop in and shake a Helios 3.  Below is a sampling of great Orvis products we now stock or soon will be stocking.  I know it’s not the old Orvis catalog but still, it kind of is.

Orvis Clearwater Rods:

Everything has changed except the value. The new Clearwater Rod Series is a complete overhaul from the ground up by our Vermont rod designers. Each rod is designed with a purpose-built profile and action to handle the fishing the rod would be traditionally used for, from medium-action small stream rods to medium-fast freshwater rods and fast-action big game rods. Designed in Vermont for anglers worldwide.

This collection of Clearwater rods is perfect for anglers who fish primarily in freshwater—they come in multiple line weights that will cover any freshwater fishing scenarios. Available in a variety of lengths, our Clearwater rods have you covered whether you're fishing small, freshwater creeks or wide, western trout rivers. The Clearwater fly rod is designed with a perfect balance of strength and precision, allowing anglers to cast heavy streamers or tiny dry flies. The value and versatility of our Clearwater rods make them favorites among freshwater anglers everywhere—offered at a great price and backed by a 25-year guarantee, our Clearwater rods cannot be beaten.

Orvis Helios 3F Fly Rods

There is a famous quote by Wyatt Earp, "Fast is fine, but accuracy is everything." What anglers discover with experience is just that. In fly fishing, accuracy is everything. Whether it's the right drift in the feeding lane, the sightline of a cruising predator, or the right level of the water column, the difference between success and failure is often measured in inches.

All modern fly rods are powerful, but accuracy is the new frontier in fly design. Making an 80-foot cast in saltwater is prospecting. Making a forty-foot cast on the nose of a laid-up tarpon is fishing. Reflect on your greatest successes and failures as an angler and the answer is clear. Accuracy breeds success.

The H3 brings us a fundamental shift from flex profiles to a new frontier in accuracy and purpose-driven design. Helios 3F and 3D each offer uncompromising purpose. 3F is accuracy with finesse, a dry fly angler's dream. 3D is accuracy with power at distance for pinpoint delivery of larger flies. The difference is taper and stiffness, but the design foundation of accuracy remains constant. To play the game at its highest level there can be no compromise and for every angler the H3 is the pinnacle of purpose, designed to master the moment and meet the demands of accuracy on a spring creek with a 3F or a tarpon flat with a 3D. Choose the game, then choose the weapon.

Incredible power, deadly accuracy, and impressive feel are part and parcel of Orvis's Helios 3F fly rods. Not only have they built a super lightweight rod in the Helios 3, but it also offers a crisp feel in hand for an unbeatable casting experience. Accuracy is important. Hurling a fly across the water and hoping for a strike won’t win any trophies—it’s those accurate drops that bring in the real prize. The difference in a couple of inches can make or break a catch.

The Helios 3F reduces the variables and harnesses the energy behind each cast for enhanced accuracy, so you can reach the far bank and drop a fly with precision every time. Orvis checked unbeatable accuracy and power off the list, but the H3F also delivers the finesse required to delicately drop a fly without spooking fish, and it has plenty of backbone to haul in the big fish of your dreams without flinching. Whether you’re chasing bonefish on the flats or casting streamers to the far bank, the Helios 3F offers the outstanding casting performance and responsiveness you need to land more fish.

Orvis Battenkill Fly Reel

There has been a long and historically successful line of Battenkill reels through Orvis history.
Simple, trouble free, and easily accessible in price-the ultimate in function and simplicity throughout the years. Welcome to the powerful, technologically advanced, and yet still accessible new generation of Battenkill reels.

This latest Battenkill Disc version is true to its heritage in looks and performance, but updated with the latest in design improvements and a significantly more powerful drag. The porting and finish pay unmistakable homage to the Battenkills of the past, but this reel incorporates our best-selling mid-arbor design. Underneath that mid arbor is the same sealed drag system found in the Hydros SL incorporating six interacting carbon and stainless drag surfaces. Positive click drag is simple and easy to adjust. The reel is built of 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum with an ergonomic Delrin handle and changing from left to right hand retrieve is simple. In black nickel.

Orvis Mirage Fly Reel

A technologically superior reel conceived and designed from the ground up and built in New England by American craftsmen to battle angry fish and laugh in the face of corrosive saltwater environments.

The Mirage features a sealed and maintenance-free carbon and stainless steel disc drag system with an aggressive knurled drag knob that goes from zero to full drag in a single drag knob rotation. Patent-pending ball and ramp drag mechanism provides a smooth turning drag that follows a non-linear curve as the drag knob is turned to give smoother adjustments in the fishing and fish-fighting range.

The reel is a super large arbor for increased retrieve rates and reduction in line coil. Machined in the USA from strong, yet lightweight 6061 T6 aluminum barstock. Ergonomically designed machined aluminum handle. Quick release spool easily converts from left to right-hand retrieve. Military-spec type III hard coat anodizing. Titanium shaft adds strength without additional weight. Fully radiused reel foot prevents kinkedleaders. Low-profile counterweight won't catch fingers or fly lines. In pewter, midnight black.

Orvis Ultralight Vest

The Ultralight Fishing Vest offers a new modern, sleek, and functional design that integrates perfectly with the concept of the Ultralight Wading System. The low-profile design keeps load closer to the body and the slimmer design reduces the "layered bulk" of conventional vests. Lightweight material, treated with DWR, dries faster and breathes better. Strategically integrated mesh offers ventilation and form-fitting comfort.

Eleven pockets, 6 exterior, 4 interior, and 1 rear. Four large vertical chest pockets for fly boxes, two of which have internal stretch mesh organization pockets. Two exterior vertical chest pockets higher on the shoulder hold leaders, tippet and other accessories. Two interior vertical chest pockets hold valuables and the right pocket has a key clip. Lower interior stretch mesh pockets form to load for maximum comfort. Highly adjustable sliding clip closure allows you to adjust vertically to the most comfortable position. Two multi-function hook-and-loop fly patches hide a port for zinger.

Construction design allows nippers to nest under patch for quick but out of the way access. Forceps can be slid up from the outside underneath patch for easy access. Two elastic cords on exterior of chest pockets for adding accessories and tippet bar. Soft poly/spandex blend lined foam collar for maximum comfort around the neck. Internal webbing loop for hanging the vest. Large rear zipper pocket securely holds extra gear. Tri-ring net holder on the upper back.
