The Boss series fly rods is our new line of rods at Big Y. It is going to have a bit more power than our Nano line, but also does well with presentation. The blanks are rolled, built, and finished in the great fly fishing state of Washington, and are priced at $299.95.
The Boss series features a multi-modulus blank a nice crisp medium/fast action, which gives this rod a traditional feel in the hand. Pac-Bay stripping guides are used as are Pac-Bay hard chrome plated snake guides, giving this rod a timeless look and quality components. A rosewood reel seat with matte silver locking mechanism add to that traditional trout rod look with a bit of a modern twist. Finally AAA grade cork is used on the grip as not a lot of materials out there look as nice or feel better in the hand than cork. We are currently offer 3 models in this series 490-4, 590-4, and a 690-4. All rods are 4 pieces, and 9'0" long. Each rod comes with a rod tube and sock along with a lifetime warranty.
The 490-4 is a 4 weight rod weighing in at 2.7 ounces. When customers ask about 4 weights we typically suggest rods that are 8'0" to 8'6" for the simple fact that 9'0" 4 weight rods tend to feel a bit sloppy. That is not the case with this rod. That extra 6 inches make it easier to clear brush behind an angler and mend the line. It is a great rod for fishing dries, lighter nymphing setups, as well as swinging soft hackles. This rod does well with a bump line, however, a AFTA standard line will do well for delicate presentations.
The 590-4 is a 5 weight rod weighing in at 2.8 ounces. This common stick has a bit more power than other rods typically found in the sub $300 price range. It can easily throw big terrestrial dries, nymphing/indicator setups, and even some light streamer duty. While I'm not the biggest Rio fan in the world, this rod really excels with a Rio Gold on it. This rod is a great go to trout rod for almost any situation you find yourself needing a 5 weight.
The 690-4 is a 6 weight rod weighing in at 2.9 ounces. We tend to fish 6 weights a lot on bigger rivers, like the Deschutes. This 6 weight gives the angler the additional power need to throw bigger flies longer distances, as well as power to land fish in heavier currents. It excels with bigger dries, nymphing/indicator setups, and streamers. Sink tip lines and nymphing tapered do well on this rod as well as most general purpose trout lines.
