Norm sent over this picture of young Thomas (11 years old) catching this fat trout on a size 20 Flashback Pheasant Tail. Talk about some serious hook setting skills! Getting kids into fly fishing can be a little difficult, with the onslaught of technology and games keeping them indoors. Two big keys to keeping kids into the sport are: getting them into fish, and keeping them comfortable. A kid who is freezing his butt off is going to be a lot less likely to get off the couch for the next fishing trip. A pair of waders are key for keeping everyone warm and happy. Bill sent over this picture after a fishing trip in Alaska where he was catching more than 20 fish a day! All on the classics too: Clouser Minnows, Dolly Llamas, and Hare Ball Leeches. We have a lot of customers who are taking their first or 20th trip up to the great state of Alaska, and boy do they hook into a lot of fish. Certain patterns up there have to be just right, and we have taken the time with our AK customer to make sure they are. David sent this picture in from Alaska after a 9 day float on the Togiak River in AK. He took a bush plane to reach his put in and their trip was the only one on the river. Anyone else wish their river contained that much solitude (I know I do). While not all of us can get to a spot where the fish face little pressure, and fishermen are scarce. We can sure throw some flies at them that they haven't seen before. Osamu from Japan caught this landlocked salmon on the Kesengawa River on a Adams Wulff. The Kesengawa River was heavily effective after the March 11th 2011 earthquake and tsunami. A little time has started to turn the river around and the populations of fish have started to rebound. Big Y is a supporter of local and national outreach and conservation efforts. If your near a river that has been heavily effected by whatever reason, we encourage you to get involved or at least focus your fishing efforts on a different location until the fish and system have had a chance to rebound.
