While it is only February, spring like weather allowed me to wash my car two days ago. While applying the wax I noticed several BWO's resting on various spots on the exterior, little translucent wings upright, for a fly fisherman that is like daffodils.
The next day at the office, not only did we turn off the heat before noon, we had all windows and doors wide open by early afternoon. That was it; time to hit the river. By late afternoon the BWO hatch was in full roar, my particular fishing spot was so thick with them they were all over my clothes, and it was hard not to breathe them in.
The fish were being stirred awake, but like a newly awakened bear, it took some gentle encouraging. Hanging a foot below the surface with a suspended midge, very subtle strikes were to be had. Aw spring, it will probably leave us again before it sets in for good, but when she blows your way do yourself a favor and drop the car wax for a later day.
