January brings us little changes, as the heart of winter sets in above the equator. Of course New Zealand, Australia, Argentina, all are experiencing some great trout fly fishing...But for the rest of us, things can begin to look a little grim.

Steelies are still the thing, check water levels and be safe.
Steelies are still the thing, check water levels, weather reports, and be safe.Steelies are coming on strong in the great lakes area now with; Sucker Spawn and Glo Bugs still working. Hot streamer patterns includes Egg-Sucking Leech, Beadhed Flashbugger, Zonkers, Sculpins, and Muddlers. Don't forget the nymphs, as the eggs begin to disappear, BH Circus Caddis, BH Hare's Ear, BH Kaufmann Stones, are all good bets.

West coast steelies are being caught on Purple Perils, Freight Trains, Green Butt Skunks, among others. Also many fish are being taken on nymphs, beadhead and other wise. #10 Beadhead Hare's Ear, Beadhead Kaufmann Stones, and don't foget Leeches.

Flats fishing can be very good right now with little pressure, especially for Tailing Reds, try Mantis Shrimp, Seaducer, Clouser Minnow or Borski's Chernobyl Crab. Speckled trout also are being caught in their haunts in and around Florida, try the same patterns as well as other shrimp and crab patterns.

Trout fishing is in full swing in the southern reaches of the United States, with anglers making the most of reduced crowds and antsy casting arms.
Streamers work excellent all winter long, favorites include buggers, muddlers. For rivers with scuds and sowbugs, they are available year around to fish, and will work right now through winter.
BWO's-The hatch that just keeps on giving. BWO, Parachute BWO, Foam Post Emerger BWO, Spinner BWO, Loop Wing Emerger BWO, BWO Wet Fly, Pheasant Tail, BH Pheasant Tail Emerger.

Midges our winter pals keep the fishing interesting when nothing else does. Beadhead Zebra Midges are excellent for attracting and getting down. Also try RS2 Emergers, RS2 Foambacks, Disco Midges, and others.
